SHUSHA, Azerbaijan, September 23. A seminar
titled "The Role of Religion in Ideological Struggle: expectations
from the Media" has started in Shusha, Trend reports.
The event has gathered leading media outlets of the country,
reporters, and public representatives.
Gunduz Ismayilov, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan's State
Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations, pointed out that
the seminar is set to shine a light on matters concerning religion
and freedom of conscience in the media.
"Media professionals might benefit from hearing different
perspectives on these issues," he said.
“We believe that the exchange of views with media
representatives will be useful for their future work. The seminar
is attended by representatives of almost all leading media outlets.
At the same time, well-known specialists in the field take part as
experts. The topic of religion is a sensitive issue. It is
important for the media to take this into account while covering
this topic,” he said.
Within the framework of the seminar, which is aimed at ensuring
wider public awareness of the model of“state-religion” relations
in Azerbaijan, raising journalists' awareness of issues related to
religion in the news policy of media structures, reports of media
specialists will be heard, interactive discussions will be held,
and media tours to the territories liberated from occupation will
be held.
The first day of the two-day regional seminar was marked by
opening speeches by Ramin Mammadov, Chairman of the State Committee
for Work with Religious Structures, and the Head of the
Humanitarian Affairs Department of the Cabinet of Ministers Arastu
Habibbayli.
The first session of the seminar on religious freedom and free
media moderated by Deputy Chairman of the State Committee Gunduz
Ismayilov was addressed by Executive Director of Baku International
Center for Multiculturalism Ravan Hasanov, Deputy Chairman of
Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting CJSC Rafig Hashimov,
Deputy Executive Director of Media Development Agency Natig
Mammadli, Executive Secretary of the Press Council of Azerbaijan
Avaz Rustamov. In conclusion, a media tour dedicated to the
historical and religious monuments of Shusha City was organized for
the participants.
The event will continue on September 24 with the second session
dedicated to the issues of combating religious radicalism. The
session will be moderated by the Rector of Azerbaijan Theology
Institute Agil Shirinov.
The third session, moderated by Elshad Miralam, deputy head of
the State Committee for Work with Religious Structures, will be
devoted to the role of media in organizing religious education.
The two-day seminar will end with a trip to the cities of
Khankendi, Khojaly, and Aghdam.
