Lula gathers G20 nations against world hunger before conference

(MENAFN) Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has intensified efforts to address global hunger and inequality through Brazil's presidency of the G20, prioritizing these issues alongside measures to tax the ultra-rich. These initiatives will be central topics during the upcoming meeting of finance ministers on Thursday and Friday.

In a statement to reporters, Lula emphasized the need for collective action among nations to combat historical challenges such as inequality, hunger, and poverty. He stressed that these issues require concerted efforts involving all willing countries.

The urgency of the matter was underscored by a recent UN report, which revealed that 733 million people suffered from hunger last year, amounting to nine percent of the world's population. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the pivotal role of financial resources in resolving this crisis, emphasizing that hunger should have no place in the modern era.

Lula's initiative, known as the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, aims to secure global financial commitments to combat hunger effectively. It seeks to replicate successful local programs on a larger scale and mobilize resources from participating nations.

Alongside the fight against hunger, Lula's agenda includes measures to tax billionaires more effectively. This initiative, supported by countries like France, Spain, South Africa, Colombia, and the African Union, focuses on implementing fair taxation systems based on the research of economist Gabriel Zucman. The aim is to prevent tax evasion among the wealthy and ensure a more equitable distribution of wealth.

The upcoming finance ministers' meeting, slated just before the G20 summit in Rio in November, represents a critical opportunity to advance these agendas. Earlier discussions among finance ministers in Sao Paulo have already laid the groundwork for addressing tax reform and wealth distribution issues at an international level.

As preparations intensify for the G20 summit, Lula's leadership underscores Brazil's commitment to tackling global challenges through inclusive policies and multilateral cooperation. The outcomes of these discussions are expected to shape international strategies aimed at reducing inequality and eradicating hunger, aligning with broader global development goals in the 21st century.
