Turkmenistan To Benefit From GEF Grant For Enhancing Climate-Smart Agriculture (Exclusive)

Turkmenistan is setto receive a grant of $3.321 million from the Global EnvironmentFacility (GEF) Trust Fund to support the Catalyzing theNature-Positive Transformation of the Agricultural Sector inTurkmenistan towards Enhanced Resilience to Climate Change project,a source at the GEF told Trend .

According to the GEF, this project aims to fortify theresilience of land and water systems in Lebap province whilepromoting sustainable farming practices to address the challengesposed by climate change and environmental degradation.

The goal is to create a farming environment capable ofwithstanding climate shocks, ensuring food security, andcontributing to global initiatives like Land Degradation Neutrality(LDN) and Integrated Water Management (IWM), while also reducinggreenhouse gas emissions.

Employing a holistic approach that prioritizes the management ofboth land and water resources, the project closely aligns withTurkmenistan's objectives for sustainable development, climateaction, and biodiversity conservation. Furthermore, it emphasizesthe importance of community involvement, particularly theempowerment of women, to ensure equitable benefits for allstakeholders.

In addition to this initiative, Turkmenistan also plays apivotal role in the regional GEF project titled StrengtheningIntegrated Water Management in the Amu Darya, Zarafshon, and PanjRiver Basins, which involves Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The GEFgrant allocated to the participating countries for this projectamounts to $5.354 million.

Furthermore, Turkmenistan is also a part of the CoordinatedApproach for Land Restoration in Vulnerable Ecosystems of CentralAsia, with a GEF grant to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan amounting to $1.784 million.

GEF is a coalition aimed at combating biodiversity loss, climatechange, and pollution while fostering the health of both land andocean ecosystems. Through its financial support, the GEF empowersdeveloping nations to tackle intricate environmental issues andmake strides towards global sustainability objectives.
