Think Tank Explains Russian Media Gaffe Over“Withdrawal” Of Troops From Kherson Region

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Russian state-run media on Monday published and later retracted a report about the "regrouping" of Russian forces from the left (east) bank of the Dnipro in Kherson region.

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW ) think tank reacted to the confusion, Ukrinform reports.

Analysts assume that the statement about "regrouping" that was due to the failure of the Russian command and government media to come up with a coordinated information line to respond to the ongoing ground operations of the armed forces of Ukraine on the east bank of the Dnipro in Kherson Region.

"The Russian command has previously struggled to establish a coordinated informational approach to developments in Ukraine, particularly when the Russian command failed to set informational conditions for defeats during the Kharkiv 2022 counteroffensive," ISW experts noted.

Retracted reports about the "regrouping" of Russian troops on the east bank in Kherson region may be indicative of actual discussions taking place in the high echelons of Russian military command that may have prematurely made it into the information space before being officially relrased by the Russian military, analysts believe.

In addition, the Russian military command could have instructed the state media to publish and then withdraw these reports as part of an information operation aimed at forcing the Ukrainian Army to underestimate available Russian manpower on the east bank, the summary states.

Regardless of the reasons and circumstances of the reports of the Russian state media, the reaction to them shows that the developments in Kherson region are difficult to cover in the Russian information space, ISW concluded.

“Events in Kherson Oblast continue to be highly neuralgic in the pro-war information space and emphasizes that the Russian media space still has not coalesced around a singular rhetorical line about what is happening on the east bank of the Dnipro,” the report says.

As reported, Russian news agencies RIA Novosti and TASS reported on Monday that the Russian Ministry of Defense had decided to move troops“to more favorable positions east of the Dnipro” in Kherson region. Both agencies later retracted the report. Ukraine's Defense Ministry referred to the reports as an act of provocation.
