Wildfires in Greece scorch zone bigger than New York city


(MENAFN) Latest wildfires in Greece have scorched a zone bigger than the town of New York, the EU's Copernicus Earth Observation Program declared on Tuesday.

“A total burnt area of 808.7 km2 (312.24 mi2) has been detected, an area larger than New York City,” it wrote in a post on social media podium X, priory known as Twitter.

In a relevant improvement, Balazs Iravju, the EU Commission representative for humanitarian fund and crisis supervision, declared that the alliance has deployed 11 firefighting aircrafts, more than 400 firefighters, 62 automobiles, as well as one helicopter in reply to wildfires in Greece’s Evros area, which he named as the biggest wildfires in EU history.

The blaze in the district, in northeastern Greece, bordering Turkey, endures to erupt on two main fronts on its 11th day, as stated by Greece-based news agency.

With raised ground and aerial firefighting powers and with slight winds, the extinguishing processes carries on to the two fronts left of the blaze in Evros, in Leptokarya, as well as the area of Kotronia, it further said.
