Taiwanese billionaire pledges to prevent country form becoming ‘next Ukraine’

(MENAFN) Foxconn billionaire Terry Gou, the creator of Apple’s biggest provider, has submitted to the Taiwanese presidential race to make peace with China and stop the self-governing island from converting to a geopolitical instrument in a deadly war with its superior neighbor.

“Taiwan must not become Ukraine, and I will not let Taiwan become the next Ukraine,” Gou declared in an address stating his entry on Monday in Taipei. “I implore the Taiwanese people to give me four years. I promise that I will bring 50 years of peace to the Taiwan Strait.” He vowed to construct a basis of “mutual trust” with Beijing.

Gou, who is 72 years old, is now the fourth nominee to apply for the race for Taiwan’s presidential election in January. He did not succeed in safeguarding the submission of the main competitor group, Kuomintang (KMT), exactly as he did following retiring as Foxconn’s president in 2019, but he made a choice to nominate this time around as a self-governing. If he’s incapable of uniting rival forces, he risks dividing the vote, leading the way to a possibly easy win by present Deputy Leader William Lai, the presiding Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) nominee.
