Lithuanian Seimas' Speaker: Parliaments Of NATO Member States See Ukraine As Part Of Alliance


(MENAFN- UkrinForm) During their visit to Lithuania, representatives of NATO parliaments expressed the opinion that their countries should increase defense spending and accept Ukraine into the Alliance.

This was reported by delfi with reference to the Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Ukrinform saw.

"Actually, there is agreement on the issue of the need to increase (defense – ed.) spending of individual countries, and on the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO – practically everyone who spoke sees this country among NATO allies. We hope it will happen as soon as possible," Čmilytė-Nielsen said.

She made this statement on Saturday during a visit to Pabrada, Lithuania, where the military training ground is located.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on June 2-3 a high-level meeting of heads of parliaments of NATO member states will be held in Lithuania, where the security situation in the region and preparations for the NATO summit, which will be held in Vilnius on July 11-12, will be discussed.

The heads of parliaments of NATO member states, as well as those of Sweden and Ukraine, heads of parliamentary committees on foreign affairs and security issues were invited to participate in the event in Vilnius. On Friday, meetings were held in the Seimas.

On Saturday, the delegations visited the Central Military Training Ground in Pabrada.
