China Conducts Raids on Capvision Offices Amid Expanded Anti-Espionage Laws

(MENAFN) Chinese authorities have carried out raids on several offices of the international advisory firm Capvision in response to the company's alleged failure to comply with China's anti-espionage laws. According to a report by state broadcaster Jiangsu Television, Capvision was accused of failing to fulfill its counterintelligence responsibilities and obligations to prevent espionage. The report cited an anonymous Police officer who claimed that Capvision hires highly-paid consulting experts who obtain sensitive data from Chinese authorities, posing a major risk to China's national security.

It is unclear when the police raids took place, but the report stated that Capvision offices in several cities, including Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, were targeted. During the raids, employees were questioned and office devices were searched. Capvision, which has headquarters in Shanghai and New York, provides consultation services to more than 2,000 international clients, according to its website.

China has recently expanded its anti-espionage laws, which have raised concerns among foreign businesses operating in the country. The new laws require companies to cooperate with Chinese security services in investigations related to national security. Failure to comply with these laws could result in fines, imprisonment, or deportation. The raids on Capvision's offices suggest that Chinese authorities are taking a more aggressive approach to enforcing these laws and cracking down on potential threats to national security. It remains to be seen how this will impact other international firms operating in China and whether it will have wider implications for foreign relations with the country.
