Zambia Safely Evacuates Citizens from Conflict-Torn Sudan

(MENAFN) Zambia has successfully evacuated 10 of its citizens who were living in Sudan amid ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and paramilitary rapid support forces. The Zambians, including six students and a family of four, arrived safely in neighboring Ethiopia, where the Zambian Embassy is now providing assistance. Another Zambian citizen had already crossed the Sudanese border into Ethiopia, while the embassy in Addis Ababa, which oversees Sudan, is in constant communication over travel arrangements for the remaining nationals.

The conflict in Sudan has claimed over 400 lives and has led many countries to evacuate their nationals. At the start of the hostilities nearly two weeks ago, 32 Zambians were known to be living in Sudan. This included eight peacekeepers from the Zambian Army and police, six university students, two juveniles, and 16 others employed by various international organizations, including the United Nations.

Zambia's foreign affairs and international cooperation minister, Stanley Kakubo, praised the successful evacuation of the 10 Zambians and explained that the remaining nationals were in transit to various countries, including Saudi Arabia, Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan. Kakubo noted that their respective employers had facilitated the evacuation plan to safer locations.

The evacuation of Zambian citizens from Sudan highlights the ongoing challenges faced by countries in dealing with conflict and instability in the region. It also underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts and effective communication between countries in ensuring the safety and well-being of their citizens during times of crisis.

While the evacuation of Zambians from Sudan is a positive development, the conflict in the country continues to pose a significant threat to the lives of civilians and foreign nationals. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how Zambia and other countries will continue to respond to the ongoing crisis and ensure the safety of their citizens in the region.
