Doha: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in Qatar stated that, on Thursday March 23, 2023, the State of Qatar began“fully managing the Doha Flight Information Region and the State of Qatar's airspace, in implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)'s decision in its first phase.”

This has marked the completion of the first phase of managing the Doha FIR skies, completely from the ground-level to infinite heights, and some areas on international waters.

According to the CAA, ICAO's historic decision allowing the State of Qatar to manage its airspace and establish the Doha Flight Information Region was“the result of a Qatari teams' efforts, led by HE Jassim bin Saif Al-Sulaiti, Minister of Transport” and "evidence of the international trust" given to the civil aviation system in Qatar.

Last year in March, the Ministry of Transport announced that the ICAO council had agreed on the establishment of the Doha FIR in what it dubbed a "new civil aviation achievement."

Speaking on the occasion last year, HE Jassim bin Saif Al-Sulaiti said that Qatar, during the implementation of the first phase of Doha FIR, will witness added new air routes and increase the aircraft waiting area capacity while in the air, and also the increasing of the area of search and rescue according to the new dimensions set by the FIR.

The first phase, as per the Minister, would also witness an increased number of vital air routes within Qatar's airspace in order to accommodate large air traffic requirements, "thus demonstrating the unique performance of the services in the country."
