(MENAFN) An extraordinary summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) commenced on Thursday in Ankara, Turkey. The summit was attended by leaders from various countries, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyzstan's President Sadyr Japarov, Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and chairman of the People’s Council of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The Secretary-General of OTS, Kubanychbek Omuraliev, was also present at the presidential complex, where the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed all the leaders.

Prior to the summit, the leaders took part in a family photo shoot. The summit's theme was Disaster-Emergency Management and Humanitarian Assistance, and the leaders deliberated on multilateral cooperation and coordination mechanisms in the fight against disasters. They also held consultations on current challenges in the region.

The inclusion of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was noteworthy, as it participated in an OTS summit for the first time. Last year, the TRNC obtained observer status during the summit in Uzbekistan.

The organization aims to elevate relations and union among its members. The members of OTS are Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, while Hungary, Turkmenistan, and the TRNC have observer status.
