Iran, Kazakhstan discuss expanding maritime ties, port projects

(MENAFN) The Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Ali-Akbar Safaei, met with Kazakh Ambassador to Tehran, Askhat Orazbay, on Monday to discuss ways of expanding maritime ties between the two countries. One of the main topics of discussion was the establishment of a direct shipping line in the Caspian Sea.

During the meeting, Safaei emphasized the importance of developing logistics and maritime cooperation between Iran and Kazakhstan, and expressed PMO’s readiness to award maritime and port projects to Kazakh contracting companies in both the north and south of Iran.

Orazbay also highlighted the visit of Kazakhstan's expert delegations to Iran over the past year to assess the facilities and equipment of Amirabad and Shahid Rajaei ports, and said that the investment of Kazakh companies in Iran's ports is currently under consideration. This indicates the potential for further cooperation and investment in Iran's ports by Kazakh companies.

Last November, Iran and Kazakhstan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at expanding cooperation in various fields, including agriculture, trade, industries, logistics, transportation and technology transfer. The MOU was signed by Javad Sadati-Nejad, the Iranian agriculture minister, and Zhumangarin Serik, the deputy prime minister and minister of trade and integration of Kazakhstan, during a visit to Tehran by a Kazakh delegation.

The discussions between the Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization and the Kazakh Ambassador to Tehran are a positive step towards enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in the maritime sector. The establishment of a direct shipping line in the Caspian Sea and potential investment by Kazakh companies in Iran's ports could lead to increased trade and economic benefits for both countries.
