Chinese President Xi Calls For Quick Resolution Of Iran Nuclear Issue

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an early and proper resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue.

According to Chinese official media, on Tuesday, President Xi Jinping of China called for an early and proper resolution of the Iran nuclear issue and pledged his support for the Islamic Republic in safeguarding its rights and interests.

Xi assured Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi during talks in Beijing that China would continue to“participate constructively” in discussions to restart negotiations on putting the Iran nuclear deal into effect.

President Xi said,“China has always viewed and developed its relations with Iran from a strategic perspective. He added,“No matter how the international and regional situation changes, China will unswervingly develop friendly cooperation with Iran, push for a new development of the China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership, and play a positive role in world peace and human progress.”

Raisi is on a three-day visit to China that started on Tuesday. He described China as an 'old friend” and said Iran's efforts to strengthen relations would be unaffected by regional and international situations, he stated in a Chinese daily editorial ahead of his visit to China.

In 2015 Iran reached a nuclear deal and placed restrictions to make it difficult for Tehran to manufacture nuclear weapons in exchange for the removal of international sanctions.

However, then-US president Donald Trump abandoned the agreement in 2018 and reinstated sanctions because he believed it had not done enough to rein down Tehran's nuclear program.

Meanwhile, during this three-day visit of Raisi to China, one of the critical agendas would be the 25-year cooperation agreement, in which Beijing is reportedly considering making long-term investments of up to $400 billion in various sectors of the Iranian economy, from infrastructure to oil and gas, in exchange for supplies of Iranian oil, was signed in 2021 but has not yet been operationalized.
