US Urged To Abide By One-China Principle

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, Feb 2 (KUNA) -- China urged the US to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiques, as US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly plans to visit Taiwan this spring.
'There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a press conference in Beijing on Thursday in response to McCarthy's recent statement that China cannot tell him where he can go at any time or any place.
'China urges relevant people in the US to credibly abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US joint communiques, observe the basic norms in international relations, handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and refrain from doing anything that could undermine China-US relations or peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
'China will continue safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity,' Mao said.
Asked about the meeting between Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen and former head of the US Indo-Pacific Command Phil Davidson earlier in the day, Mao reiterated that 'Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.'
'Resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese and must be decided by Chinese ourselves,' she stressed.
The US side should deliver on US leaders' commitment of not supporting 'Taiwan independence,' stop all forms of official interaction and military contact with Taiwan, stop meddling in the Taiwan question, and stop creating new factors that could lead to tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the spokeswoman added.
China and Taiwan separated after a civil war in 1949, but Beijing sees the island as its territory. (end)
