(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Transparency International has announced the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2022, in which Afghanistan witnessed a significant improvement under the Taliban regime.
According to the Transparency International report announced on Monday, Afghanistan under the Taliban regime ranked 150 out of 180 countries – a significant improvement compared to that of 2021, which ranked 174 out of 180.
Transparency International assesses the financial transparency of 180 countries in its annual report, in which Afghanistan's Corruption Perception Index score is 24 out of 100, putting the country in 150th place.
In 2021, Afghanistan's CPI score was 3, ranking the country as one of the 10 most corrupt countries in the world.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has praised the findings of Transparency International, and Inamullah Samangani, Head of Government Media and Information Center (GMIC) stated,“according to the findings of Transparency International, Afghanistan is no longer among the ten most corrupt countries of the world, and has improved from 174 to 150 in terms of transparency ranking.
Financial transparency experts, however, believe that the inflow of tremendous amount of cash during the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan had caused massive corruption, and reiterate the findings of Transparency International is not compatible with the current context of Afghanistan.
Economic expert Sayeed Abdul Rahman believes that there are several major reasons linked to the widespread corruption in Afghanistan in terms of CPI score.
The ruling regime is more united compared to the previous regime. This is leading to a more transparent financial system, which did not exist in the previous government.
Another reason is a lack of support for corrupt political figures in the current regime. In the previous regime, not only corrupt individuals were punished, but also had a strong intergovernmental network providing them essential support in times of need.
Moreover, the inflow of a massive amount of cash into the country had given birth to corruption, which does not exist in this regime.
