Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak: UAE Leadership's long-term vision has enabled the Barakah Plant to accelerate our path towards Net Zero by 2050

His Excellency Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation's (ENEC) Board of Directors, highlighted the importance of the visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and His Excellency Yoon Suk Yeol, President of the Republic of Korea, to the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, an example of the UAE's forward-looking vision.

In 2007, the nation's strategic and data-driven approach to energy planning concluded that nuclear energy had an essential role in decarbonizing the UAE's energy mix. As a result, the UAE's leadership has offered its unwavering support to the nation's Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, which is accelerating the decarbonization of the UAE's grid by generating abundant, 24/7 emissions-free electricity at the flagship Barakah plant.

Commenting on the visit to the Barakah Plant by the two Presidents, Al Mubarak said:“The Barakah Plant is one of the largest nuclear energy projects in the world and one of the most successful new nuclear energy projects in terms of project management and cost. It showcases nuclear energy's potential as an effective climate solution, one that is playing a leading role in our nation's transition to zero-carbon sources of energy, as part of the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategy.”

“The achievements at the Barakah Plant have made the latter a benchmark for many countries that are considering adding peaceful nuclear energy to their energy mix to help decarbonize their economies. Serving as the cornerstone of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, the Barakah Plant is a catalyst for innovation that has fostered nuclear energy know-how and technical expertise in the UAE. With this capability, we can now explore and incubate strategic investments domestically and internationally, exploring opportunities in R&D, the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), and nuclear-based, emissions-free production of steam and hydrogen.”

“We look forward to many decades of partnership with our South Korean partners through our Net Zero Acceleration Program, a joint UAE-Korean initiative that seeks to drive the clean energy transition in our nations, and globally, using our unique expertise to help other nations in decarbonizing their energy portfolios,” Al Mubarak concluded.
