China's shocking population statistics

(MENAFN) China's population decreased by 850,000 in last year, the first decline since 1962, according to data released on Tuesday by the National Bureau of Statistics. A record-low birth rate and the greatest mortality rate since 1976 were also revealed by the yearly statistics survey.

The NBS stated during the press conference on Tuesday that the population of the Chinese mainland was 1.41175 billion at the end of last year. This number includes all residents of the 31 provinces and autonomous regions but not those who dwell in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macao. It also does not include foreign nationals who reside on the Chinese mainland.

Statistics for last year revealed an aging population, a declining work force, low birth and high mortality rates, more males than women, and a grossly disproportionate number of city inhabitants compared to rural residents. This is attributed by Chinese demographers to the enduring effects of the "One Child" policy, which was only eased in 2015.

According to Yuan Xin, a professor at the Institute of Population and Development at Nankai University's School of Economics, China's population is "still hovering around the zero growth stage," she told the Global Times on Tuesday. The margin is "very small for 1.4 billion people," he declared, adding that there was a net rise of 480,000 persons in 2021.
