AMMAN - The Ministry of Higher Education allocates JD10 million from its budget to support the Student Support Fund a year, according to Mamoun Al Debie, the ministry's Secretary General.

Speaking during a press conference, Debie said that the ministry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance's department of public funds, is working on collecting loans from students who obtained them in previous years.

He noted that at this stage the ministry is collecting
loans obtained in 2016 worth JD5 million, meaning
the available amount in the fund is JD15 million.

If
the instructions of grants and loans are implemented 'strictly', a deficit of JD20 million is expected, he said, noting that to ease the deficit,
the Higher Education Council, will deduct
no less than JD20 million from the JD70-million government support for the universities to cover 33,402 partial and full
grants and loans, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
