Mall of Qatar hosted FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 activities where visitors to the mall took part in various games and were briefed on the tournament's features yesterday.

Apart from Mall of Qatar, Place Vendome and Doha Festival City are also hosting the World Cup activities.

During the activation, visitors and fans can meet and greet football legends. They can also engage and play interactive games and activities including Virtual Reality Football, and video games. Faisal Khalid, Ambassador Programme Manager of Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) told The Peninsula that aside from the activations happening here, it is also being held across the GCC countries in major cities.

He stressed the event is“to engage with the fans.”

“We're here to showcase what's available during the tournament, and engage mainly with the fans and [have] insights with the ambassadors because everyone wants to meet these football legends, they are well-known, are big names in the world of football especially in the GCC and Qatar.”

A huge crowd especially the youngsters flocked to the booth of the event located near Gate 2 of the mall. Four Qatar Legacy Local Ambassadors attended yesterday's event: Ahmad Khalil, Ibrahim Khalfan, Khalid Salman, and Mubarak Mustafa. The Peninsula talked to two of these football legends.

Mubarak Mustafa who was the goalkeeper of the National Team before said he is thrilled that the public came all the way to the mall and experience what the country offers for the World Cup.“I am happy, the World Cup is coming with 51 days left,” he said. Mostafa, also known as Al Sinyari, is regarded as one of the greatest Arab and Qatari footballers of all time. A two-time winner of the Arabian Gulf Cup, he was top scorer and player of the tournament in 1992 and struck 34 goals for Qatar.

Khalid Salman meanwhile highlighted that football is not only limited to the World Cup and men, and the event is a testament that regardless of age and background, everyone can play football.

He also emphasised that Qatar's hosting of the quadrennial event is more than ready even six months before.“Qatar is ready before the competition. We are ready 100 percent, we are prepared six months even before the competition starts.”

Salman was a star of the Qatar team that made the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship final. He scored a hat-trick against Brazil in the quarter-finals, before Qatar went on to beat England in the semi-finals. Back in August, SC had hosted activations at the said three malls to mark the 100 days countdown.

The ongoing activation serves as a venue to promote the World Cup, and the tourist offerings in Qatar.
