Sheikh Hamad Award Holds Webinar On Translations Between Arabic And Bahasa

Doha: Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding held a technical seminar via video on“The Reality and Horizons of Translation between Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia language” with the participation of a number of Indonesian and Arab academics and translators as part of the translation Seminars series for the eighth season of 2022. The Bahasa language is listed on the Achievement Category this year.

At the outset, media Advisor to sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad stressed the importance of the cultural interaction between different languages and conditions for achieving mature cultural interaction. She reviewed the objectives of the Award, its vision and the mechanism of distributing the Award's annual financial value in addition to the Award categories and the importance of choosing the Bahasa Indonesia language among the languages of the Achievement Category for this season, explaining that the Award focused its attention this season, 2022, besides the Indonesian language, on the selection of five new languages in the Achievement Category, namely: Vietnamese, Kazakh, Swahili and Romanian languages. She noted that the Award will close the nomination door via its website ( the day after tomorrow, August 15th.

For his part, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic and Arab Studies at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta Dr. Mohammad Syairozi Dimyathi Ilias spoke about the Indonesian experience in translation into Arabic and vice versa, the nature of official and individual efforts and their history which coincided with the entry of Islam into the archipelago of Indonesia in the 12th-13th centuries AD when the translation movement flourished, and the Malay letters were written in Arabic, until colonialism came and changed the letters to Latin to this day. The translation at that time was literal and limited to Islamic religious books, which were taught in Islamic institutes, Dr. Ilias said noting that the translation movement witnessed a remarkable development after the return of Indonesian scholars from Arab countries. He said the late seventies of the last century were viewed as the era of flourishing translation from Arabic to Indonesian to multiply even more with the turn of the new millennium.

In turn, translator Dr. Abdul Hay Al-Katani, a member of the Indonesian Council of Scholars at Ibn Khaldun University in Bogor, Indonesia, reviewed his experience in the field of translation from Arabic to Bahasa Indonesia and presented a statistical reading in the volume of the translator from Bahasa Indonesia to Arabic, pointing out that he translated more than a hundred works from Arabic to Indonesian, including translations done in partnership with other researchers and translators.

Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding in its current edition includes translation in single books, and is divided into four branches: translation from Arabic to English, from English to Arabic, n from Arabic to Turkish, and from Turkish to Arabic, and the value of each of these awards is $200,000.

The second category includes the Achievement Award in selected languages, which this year comprise translation from and into Arabic, in the languages of Bahasa Indonesia, Kazakh, Romanian, Swahili snd Vietnamese. The total value of the awards in this category is USD one million dollars, while the third category is allocated for achievement in the two main languages, English and Turkish, and the value of this award is $200,000.
