BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. The 29th session
of the conference of the Parties to the UN Framework convention on
Climate Change held discussions on“Decarbonization, Adaptation of
Food Systems and Restoration of Nature on the Way to 1.5°C."

The discussions, moderated by the Minister of Climate Change and
Environment of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Amina Al Dahak and
Director General of the World Resources Institute Ani Dasgupta,
featured speeches by Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen,
President of Ethiopia Taye Atske Selassie, Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Finance of the Republic of Fiji Biman Prasad, FAO
Director-General Qu Dongyu, and noted that the proper use of land
and water resources is one of the key factors in combating climate
change.
Speaking at the discussions, Agriculture Minister Majnun
Mammadov informed the participants about the initiatives of the
Azerbaijani government to develop climate-resilient agriculture and
transform food systems. Noting that climate change also hurts the
agricultural sector, the Minister spoke about sustainable
agriculture, water management, and climate adaptation strategies
being implemented to overcome the problems of water scarcity and
land salinization.
Informing the participants about the Baku Climate Initiative for
Farmers, Minister Majnun Mammadov noted that the initiative aims to
bring together global partners, promote investments in
climate-positive food systems, and provide stronger support,
especially for women and youth.
Stressing the importance of global cooperation in the
climate-resilient development of Azerbaijan's agricultural sector,
the Minister noted that our country, cooperating with international
partners, adheres to the principles of developing sustainable
agricultural practices.
The participants of the event exchanged views on the
transformation of food systems, innovative models and policies to
mitigate the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector
and increase yields, decarbonization and restoration of nature,
strategies to achieve sustainable land use transitions, financing
of sustainable land use, financial models for the transformation of
agriculture and food systems and other relevant topics. It was
noted that this COP29 event will yield positive results in terms of
enhancing cooperation among countries in food security,
sustainability, and nature conservation, as well as advancing
global action on climate change.
Baku hosts the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the official
opening ceremony of which was held on November 11 at the Baku
Olympic Stadium.
The Summit of World Leaders on Climate Action will be held on
November 12-13.
The decision to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan was made on December 11
last year at the plenary session of COP28 in Dubai.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was signed in June
1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to prevent dangerous
anthropogenic impacts on the climate system.
The first session was held in March 1995 in Berlin and the
conference secretariat is located in Bonn.
