Azerbaijan Turns Into Venue For Global Climate Discussions - Kyrgyzstan's Minister


(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Azerbaijan is accepting participants from all over the world at the COP29 conference to discuss key climate change issues, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision of Kyrgyzstan Meder Mashiev told reporters, Trend reports.

“We arrived at COP29 in Baku with an impressive delegation and opened our first national pavilion. I am pleased to be personally present at such a significant event. The organization of the event is at the highest level, and it is pleasant that such an important event is held on the brotherly Azerbaijani land. We are very pleased that Azerbaijan is hosting participants from all over the world to discuss key climate change issues at the COP29 conference,” the minister said.

Mashiev pointed out that the issues tied to climate change are snowballing year after year.

“Today it is clear to everyone that climate change is not an abstract threat but a real problem. We need to actively combat the consequences of these changes, and we are glad that this topic is being discussed here in Azerbaijan,” he added.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) kicked off in Baku on November 11.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for“Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
