Belarus' President Proposes Global Climate Change Action At COP29 In Azerbaijan

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko voiced proposals for global action to combat climate change at the COP29 summit in Baku, Trend reports.

"These and other areas call for pulling together our international resources and joining forces. Actions speak louder than words. It's high time to put our money where our mouth is. The one who's got the bill should step up to the plate, not just twiddle his thumbs in the office,” emphasized the Belarusian leader.

The president laid it on the line that the climate has shifted, and that's the long and short of it.

“Therefore, the primary task is to reconfigure the national economy, especially agriculture, taking into account the changed conditions, to adapt it to the new conditions,” he declared.

Aleksandr Lukashenko made it clear that Belarus is in the thick of things and is more than willing to lend a helping hand with its know-how.

The head of state called on the powers that be to lend a hand to developing countries, ensuring they can get a fair shake at green technologies without stepping on their toes when it comes to national interests. He mentioned that it's high time to cut the cord on anything that stands in the way of international trade in technology, the sharing of innovations, and the exchange of best practices.

As Lukashenko puts it, the world has already been down that road where shiny new products, touted as greener options, end up doing just as much harm in the long run.

“It's high time we rolled up our sleeves and took a good, hard look at how innovations might shake things up for the environment from start to finish. We need a fresh perspective on the whole shebang,” Lukashenko said.

Baku hosts the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the official opening of which was held on November 11 at the Azerbaijan's Baku Olympic Stadium.

The decision to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan was taken on December 11 last year at the plenary session of COP28 in Dubai.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was signed in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to prevent dangerous anthropogenic impacts on the climate system.

The first session was held in March 1995 in Berlin and the conference secretariat is located in Bonn.
