Fener Greek patriarch heads to Istanbul hospital

(MENAFN) Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew on Friday went to the hospital in Istanbul where a blaze started.

Bartholomew was informed regarding the damage triggered by Thursday's fire.

Omer Arisoy, the mayor of Zeytinburnu district where the hospital is placed, declared the preliminary assessment displays that the building did not undergo any big damage.

"Even though simple renovations and repairs are needed in the building, there is no problem in the load-bearing elements,” Arisoy noted.

Some parts of the building, mainly the roof, were gutted by the fire, he went on.

A municipality team of 40 people is now working to clear the wreckage, the mayor also said.

When the blaze started and engulfed the roof of the famous Balikli Greek Hospital, some 80 patients, mostly old people, in the hospital were sent to a close health care institution.
