North Korea's Foreign Ministry Spokesman: US is forming "Asian NATO" with South Korea, Japan

(MENAFN) North Korea has slammed a recent agreement between the United States, South Korea, and Japan to boost military cooperation, claiming it is part of a US strategy to establish a regional military alliance similar to NATO.

On the margins of a NATO meeting on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol met and agreed to deepen their security cooperation in the face of North Korean nuclear and missile threats.

The trio agreed at the start of the 23-minute meeting in Madrid that North Korea's nuclear and missile programs presented major concerns not just to the Korean peninsula, but also to East Asia and the rest of the globe.

However, North Korea’s foreign ministry representative stated that the real goal of the US spreading the rumor about “threat from North Korea” is to “provide an excuse for attaining military supremacy over the Asia-Pacific region,” KCNA state news agency released on Sunday.

“The prevailing situation more urgently calls for building up the country’s defense to actively cope with the rapid aggravation of the security environment,” the representative noted.
