Iraq claims to buy 40 million cubic meters of Iranian gas each day

(MENAFN) As said by Iraq's NINA news agency, Iraqi officials noted a higher boost in natural gas supplies from neighboring Iran two days after the Arab country cleared over $1.7 billion in arrears it owes Iran for prior gas shipments.

According to Ahmad Musa, spokesman for the Iraqi Power Ministry, imports of natural gas from Iran, on which Iraq relies heavily for electricity generation, have surpassed 40 million cubic meters (mcm) per day.

Musa, on the other hand, stated that Iraq will continue to request additional gas supplies from Iran, claiming that the country's power plants would experience record demand for gas during the summer months.

He stated that Iraq will require 50-55 mcm per day of natural gas from Iran to meet summer demand, and that Iran's early reaction to the request has been good.
