Doha: Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, is offering a first of its kind paediatric pain- free care as part of its unique service for children in Qatar.
The pediatric Emergency Department at Sidra medicine is the only emergency department providing pain-free treatment in Qatar, said Division Chief and Senior attending physician, Emergency Medicine at Sidra Medicine, Dr. Sudhakar Adusumilli.
“Sidra Emergency Department promotes pain free care. We have exceptionally talented and skilled team who look after children with injuries who need interventions such as suturing and fracture reduction. These are done under procedural sedation within Emergency Department,” Dr. Adusumilli told The Peninsula.
“This will avoid higher level of intervention with general anaesthesia and all associated risks with it and long waiting times for the treatment. We are the only ED department providing this treatment in Qatar,” he added.
He said the Pediatric Emergency Department provided safe procedural sedation to 1,123 children in 2021.
The Pediatric Emergency Department at Sidra Medicine is also the only tertiary paediatric emergency centre in Qatar. It provides access to children aged up to 18 years.
Emergency Department and its Urgent Care Center at Sidra Medicine treat children with minor to life threatening injuries. It is also the only major trauma centre for children in Qatar.
Dr. Sudhakar Adusumilli added:“We treat children with very complex health problems who experience sudden changes to their existing health condition or develop a new problem that can impact their existing health condition. At the same time, our urgent care clinic, which is a private service, treats children with mild to moderate medical problems and those who sustain injuries.”
Common conditions presented at the Emergency Department, include children with respiratory infections, asthma, complications of diabetes, dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhoea, suspected sepsis, headaches, fractured bones, abdominal pain, and surgical conditions such as appendicitis. Urgent Care Center treats children with minor medical ailments such as cold and coughs, diarrhoea and vomiting and other minor symptoms.
Dr. Adusumilli said in 2021 the Paediatric Emergency Department treated 91,809 children. On average, it has treated 1,765 children per week and 7,650 per month. Among them, 539 children had sustained serious injuries.
