(MENAFN) On Thursday, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) stated that people living in internal dislocation because of wars or natural catastrophes internationally amounted to a peak of 59.1 million at the end of last year, increasing from 55 million a year earlier.
Jan Egeland, secretary-general of the Norwegian Refugee Council stated that "The situation today is phenomenally worse than even our record figure suggests. It doesn't include nearly eight million people forced to flee the war in Ukraine."
He stated to at a press conference for the IDMC prearranged by the UN Geneva journalists' association, ACANU, on the center's annual statement.
As mentioned in the statement, the exceptional number is the result of new waves of viciousness and extended war in nations extending from Ethiopia and Afghanistan to Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
