Improved Power, Water Demand To Boost QEWC Growth This Year

The high demand of power and water due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is expect to boost the growth of Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) this year, according QNB Financial Services.

“Growth in 2022 should be fueled by improved power and water offtake, especially during 2H (second half of) 2022 given the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” said QNB Financial Services in its report.“As expected, the UAH water expansion (61.45 MIGD) was commissioned during 1Q (first quarter) 2021,” it added.

The Umm AI Haul Power Project ( which is 60 percent owned by QEWC, was commissioned with a production capacity of 2,520 MW of electricity and 136.5 MIGD of desalinated water and started full commercial operation in the second quarter of 2018.

The company completed the expansion of Umm AI Houl station, which increased its production capacity of desalinated water by an additional 61.4 million MIGD. The project achieved a production capacity of 30 MIGD during February 2021 and full production capacity was achieved early April 2021. Umm AI Houl Power Station is considered as one of the most vital energy in the country and one of the largest desalination facilities in the region.

The project has a strategic importance to the nation and it is an important step towards achieving water security in the country. The reverse osmosis technology used for the plant is environment friendly and contributes to the efforts to reduce gas emissions as much as possible and raise the level of performance. This contributes significantly to raising the efficiency of natural resource management in line with Qatar's National Vision to preserve the nature and rely on environment friendly technologies. After the expansion, the Umm AI Houl station covers 30 percent of the country's electricity needs and 58 percent of its total water requirements.
