Doha: The Ministry of Public health (MoPH) in collaboration with the Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI), Hamad Medical Corporation, organised the first Qatar diabetes and Obesity Research Symposium virtually.

The symposium was successfully co-delivered alongside the Qatar Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic annual conference (QDEM-6).

In his opening speech, sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry of Public Health, said,“Researchers across the globe have long argued for more insights into the pathophysiology and treatment of both diabetes and obesity. To promote research in this area, the National Diabetes Strategy, 2016-2022, has developed a comprehensive research agenda for diabetes related research.'

He added,“We are very proud to hold a Diabetes and Obesity Research Symposium which is the first step towards the implementation of the Qatar Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors research agenda. We look forward to have it organised annually to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among researchers in Qatar.”

Prof Shahrad Taheri, Chair of the National Diabetes Strategy Research Sub-Committee and Director of the National Obesity Treatment Centre opened the event by saying that the Qatar Diabetes and Obesity Research Symposium is a flagship activity of the National Diabetes Strategy, 2016-2022, and intends to promote diabetes and obesity research in Qatar.

The symposium is part of the larger umbrella of activities designed to build the research ecosystem for implementation of National Diabetes Research Agenda, locally, Prof Taheri said.

'Several renowned local and international speakers, across various institutions, presented at the symposium emerging research areas in the field of diabetes and obesity. We thank everyone for their participation and contribution.'

Prof Abdul Badi Abou Samra, Co-Chair of the National Diabetes Committee, and Director of the Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI) emphasised that the Diabetes and Obesity Research Symposium is established as a platform to bring together experts and researchers from leading institutions in Qatar to discuss their research.

It was delivered alongside the sixth annual Qatar Diabetes Endocrine and Metabolism conference (QDEM-6) organised by Qatar Metabolic Institute and the Division of Endocrinology & Diabetes at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), targeting both the research community as well as the healthcare professionals, with the ultimate aim to promote use of clinical research findings in obesity and diabetes for improvement of clinical care of the patients.
