Australian expatriates living in the country are advised to register as overseas voters if they haven't yet, as retweeted by Australian Ambassador H E Jonathan Muir.

The 2022 Australian federal election is set for late May.

According to Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), if one is living overseas and wants to participate in the federal election,“you need to take additional action to enroll and then access your vote.” There are two options on this, one is enrolling to vote overseas and voting from overseas.

To be eligible to enrol to vote from overseas, you must be an Australian citizen aged 18 years or older, and intending to return to Australia within six years.
AEC said that if you are overseas and intending to return to Australia within six years, you can register as an overseas elector. If you are already enrolled, you can register up to three months before, or within three years after, you leave Australia. And if you are not already enrolled, and have been overseas for less than three years, you must first enrol to vote.

Meanwhile, if you are going overseas for a short period of time and plan to return to your address in Australia you can still enrol and vote. And if you are moving overseas indefinitely, your name will be removed from the electoral roll and will not be able to vote in any federal elections held while you are overseas. Should you return to Australia to live permanently, you may re-enrol after you have been at your residential address for a minimum of one month.

If you are moving overseas indefinitely, and do not intend to return to Australia, one must complete and submit an overseas notification form.

Under the overseas voting option, there are two categories available which are voting by post or in-person voting. The commission also clarified that online voting is not allowed under Australia's electoral laws.
