Brasília – Cargo throughput at ports in Brazil have set a new record, National Agency for Waterway transportation (Antaq) reported on Thursday (2). According to the agency, 1.2 billion tonnes were handled in 2021, up 4.8% from 2020.

“The port sector is no longer a bottleneck, as it has met the demands of Brazilian productive sector and reached very relevant results. In addition to the market, this response comes in the form of investments by us and the private sector,” Infrastructure minister Tarcísio de Freitas was quoted as saying.

According to a statement made public by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the throughput is forecasted to grow in 2022 as well. The numbers show that a 2.4% year-on-year increase is to be expected.

“For the following four years, the agency forecasts that the uptrend in the port throughput will remain. In 2026, the Brazilian port sector is expected to handle 1.402 billion tonnes, compared with 1.350 billion tonnes in 2025,” the document reads.
