Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar H E Ridwan Hassan described the relations between Qatar and his country as“very good.”
Hassan told The Peninsula that“we have a very good bilateral relationship with Qatar certainly, the Political level, the relationship between the two leaders are very good, very close, His Highness Amir sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited twice in 2017 and 2019, our President (Joko Widodo) also visited Qatar in 2015.
He also pointed that the economic cooperation between the two countries are strong.“A lot of Qatari investments are there in Jakarta like Ooredoo, Nebras Power, and Qatar National Bank (QNB),” he said.
Qatar Chamber revealed that the bilateral trade exchange between Qatar and Indonesia reached QR2.5bn in 2020, a two per cent growth compared to 2019. The Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Mahendra Siregar, meanwhile, expects that for this year, it will grow to four per cent amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
To date, there are 11 Indonesian companies with Qatari partners operating in the country in trade, contracting, hospitality and services.
Moreover, the Ambassador noted on the sidelines of Indonesian Embassy's first Culinary Night held recently, that the social cooperation is likewise outstanding.
“We have 17,000 people living here and I believe a lot of tourists are coming from Qatar whether they are Qatari or different nationalities visiting Indonesia. So far, we have a very good relationship, not only bilaterally but also in the international levels,” he disclosed.
Citing that Indonesia has a lot of potentials for investment, H E Hassan said:“We would like deeper economic relations; Indonesia should be one of the choices of Qatar in doing investment overseas.”
The diplomatic relations between Qatar and Indonesia started in 1976, over the years they have signed 10 agreements, the latest of which include Agreement regulating the use of the Indonesian workforce in Qatar; a bilateral agreement on the cancellation of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic, service and private passports between the two countries; and memorandum of understanding between the Government of Indonesia and the Qatar Investment Authority on Investment.
