IUST Organises Capacity Building Workshop For College Principals

Awantipora- Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (CIED) Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organized a day-long capacity building workshop on 'Innovation and Entrepreneurship” on Monday. The programme was attended by the Principals and faculty members from different degree Colleges from across the Valley.

Vice Chancellor IUST Prof. Shakil A. Romshoo who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, in his address called on universities and colleges to implement the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020, in letter and spirit as that outlines the vision of new education system of India which emphasised the capacity building and skill development significantly, and said,“it's our responsibility to implement NEP 2020 in collaboration with degree colleges'.

He stressed on colleges to introduce a minimum 1 year or 6 months specific courses to train students in specific fields so that they would overcome the issue of unemployment as well as revenue generation. 'We are always available to help such colleges in their pursuit of training the students', he said.

Director Colleges (Higher Education Jammu and Kashmir) Prof Yasmeen Ashai in her address congratulated the university for holding this meaningful workshop. 'I look forward to a support from the IUST administration to handhold government Degree Colleges in the achieving success in the mission of entrepreneurship and innovation as the university has expertise in incubation and innovation centres which colleges can benefit from,' she said.
She added that there were 14 colleges across J&K, including Degree College Bemina which are already into this process of entrepreneurship development.

Nuclear Physicist IIT Ropar and Life member Indian Physics Association Dr. Pushpendra P. Singh in his address through the virtual mode shed light on the scope of technological intervention in the domains of agriculture, food etc. which could create major avenues for entrepreneurship.

Dean Academic Affairs IUST, Prof. A. H. Moon laid emphasis on the role of IUST in various areas concerning entrepreneurship and research and said, ' IUST under the leadership of Prof. Romshoo is focused on research, innovation, skill development and entrepreneurship- 'RISE' as these are our thrust areas to bring change in the education system.'

Registrar IUST Prof. Naseer Iqbal while addressing the college principals and faculty members noted the importance of such events as that gave a chance to IUST for contributing towards the society and said, 'Our new generation must take to entrepreneurship and try to be job creators rather than job seekers”.

Dean Research Prof. Haroon Naik, speaking on the occasion also shared his views regarding scope for entrepreneurship and said, 'There are only two Food processing industries in J&K so Food Technology as a Course is very important to introduce at college level'.

'There are 16% labourers who are involved in food processing, we have a capacity of producing man power for just one crop that's apple in J&K, like Refrigeration, not a single person is trained in Refrigeration IUST can be your mentor for introducing such courses,' Naik said.

Earlier Director CIED, IUST Dr. Parvez Ahmad Mir welcomed the dignitaries and detailed the mandate and achievements of the Entrepreneurship Development Cell since its inception in 2017, which is why it was converted to CIED that has 5 verticals focusing on various aspects of building a culture of innovation and developing entrepreneurship in IUST and JKUT .

Sr Asst Prof DJMC, Dr. Monisa Qadiri who is also Media Advisor to Vice Chancellor IUST, proposed a vote of thanks and reiterated IUST's vision for community outreach and extension of support to various educational institutions.

The event was followed by question answer session and certificates of participation were also distributed. The proceedings were conducted by research scholar (Management Studies) Tehban Sahaf.
