Kenya: Boat overturns on Lake Victoria, leaves 7 dead


(MENAFN) On Thursday, Sep. 23 a Kenyan regional administration official corroborated that seven bodies have been recovered after a boat overturned on Lake Victoria.

The seven bodies were recovered from the lake after the incident on Tuesday, according to Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan. Four persons remain missing.

An overall of 19 passengers were aboard from Homa Bay Pier Beach heading to Ndhuru Beach in Suba North constituency before the boat overturned only around 400 meters from the landing location. Eight passengers were saved and received medical care at the county health referral facility.

The boat was overfull with passengers and baggage like bags of cement, timber, pieces of iron sheets and foodstuff above its advised capacity, which might have resulted in the accident.
