São Paulo – The Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) is seeking a partnership with Brazilian companies to hold Space Week at expo 2020 Dubai, a world's fair in the United Arab Emirates, from October 1 this year to March 31, 2022. The minister, astronaut Marcos Pontes (pictured above), visited the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) headquarters, in the capital city of São Paulo, on Wednesday (25) to present the idea to the private sector.

The MCTI will host the Space Week within the Brazil Pavilion from October 17 to 23, following the Expo's schedule, which will have this theme during the period. On this occasion, Brazil will present its expertise in the space sector to the world. Expo 2020 is a world's fair in which countries showcase their best, and that receives a diverse international audience, including business people eager to invest.
“It is important for our companies to participate and show our capabilities and the possibility of expansion in international work,” said Pontes at a meeting with leaders and executives at the ABCC, in which representatives of Brazilian companies participated over the internet. Space Week could serve as a showcase for companies interested in presenting products and attracting foreign partners.“This event in Dubai will open up a huge path,” said Pontes.
According to the minister, the world is unaware of Brazil's advances in prominent sectors such as space.“Brazil needs to present itself in the fields of science, technology, and innovative solutions,” he said at the meeting. Pontes spoke of these advancements, mentioning the Alcântara Space Center, now open to international businesses, satellite launches made by Brazil in recent years, and the development of technologies such as synthetic aperture radars.
Brazil in space
The first Brazilian to be in space, Pontes mentioned Brazil's participation in the NASA Artemis program, in which the country will be a supplier of rovers and equipment for data and material collection on the moon and other surfaces. He also told of the development of rockets, the application of space activities in agriculture, defense, environment, and other fields, and the modification of the Brazilian space regulation, among other initiatives.

The MCTI intends to show these and other Brazilian advancements dynamically and interactively during Space Week. Interested companies could become sponsors with four tiers to choose from, determining the level of exposure each will have. This can range from inserting the company's name in the event's marketing to placing a logo in the gallery of the Brazil Pavilion, participating in Space Week's activities, and using the pavilion spaces. The company that opts for the higher tier will be co-chair of Space Week.
As part of the event, the Space4Women seminar will be held on October 21 and 22 to showcase the experience and contribution of women in the space sector. An initiative of the MCTI and the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), it aims to encourage women and girls to pursue education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and raise awareness about career opportunities, the importance of gender equality and women's empowerment in the space sector.
Partnership with the ABCC
The meeting took place at the ABCC's headquarters, as the institution will support MCTI's Space Week and help the ministry invite Brazilian companies into the partnership.“It is a great world's fair, with a critical aspect of innovation, technology, and science,” said the president of the ABCC, Osmar Chohfi, at the meeting regarding Expo 2020. He said the participation of the MCTI and the presence of the minister himself would be essential to highlight Brazil's advances in high-end technology. Marcos Pontes is expected to be present during Space Week in Dubai.

The minister was also at the ABCC for the launch of the organization's 4.0 space. This Wednesday, the ABCC launched three projects to take Brazil's relations with the Arab countries into the technological era: the ABCC Lab, a laboratory to connect innovation agents in both regions, the Ellos Platform, which will streamline and digitalize the procedures and contacts for trade between Brazilians and Arabs, and the Innovation Committee, which will have companies from both sides discussing topics associated with innovation. In an interview with ANBA, minister Marcos Pontes spoke about the possibility of joint development by Arabs and Brazilians in future-oriented companies, as there is a strong connection between the regions due to the number of Arab descendants and immigrants in Brazil.“When we talk about science and technology, we are talking about transforming the possibilities of the future for our young people today, young entrepreneurs and students. Without a doubt, this rapprochement between the Arab world and Brazil is going to be extremely important,” he stated.
Among others, also participated in the activities at the ABCC with the MCTI, the events advisor at the Secretariat for Articulation and Promotion of Science, Daniel Marques; the secretary for Articulation and Promotion of Science, Christiane Corrêa; the secretary for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Paulo Alvim; and from the ABCC, the president of the Superior Board of Directors, Marcelo Sallum; the Foreign Trade vice president, Ruy Cury; and the Marketing vice president, Riad Younes.
