Qatar leads Arab teams at Tokyo Olympics

Doha: Qatar is relishing its best ever performance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Not just that, the country is also ahead of the GCC neighbours and the other Arab countries at the ongoing Games. 

Qatar has won two gold medals in Tokyo 2020 so far, with Fares Ibrahim clinching the 96kg category victory in weightlifting to win first ever Olympic medal for the country on Saturday. World’s high jump superstar Mutaz Barshim then won a gold medal the following day, sharing win with his friend Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy in the final.   

With two gold medals, Qatar is ahead of Tunisia (one gold and a silver), Morocco (one gold), Jordan (one silver), Egypt (2 bronze) and Kuwait (one bronze).  

The Team Qatar athletes have full support of the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, who stands with the national athletes giving them full support. 

With two gold medals in Tokyo, Qatar has also risen in the overall Olympic standings among Arab countries in 10th appearance at the Games. 

With a total of seven medals in all Olympic editions as of now, Qatar has jumped to fifth with Egypt leads the standings with 34 medals, including 7 gold medals. Qatar athletes have also achieved individual records with Barshim becoming the first Asian athlete to win all Olympic medals which includes bronze at London 2012 and a silver medal at Rio 2016. 

Fares on his way to victory set two Olympic records (225kg clean and jerk) and a massive combined score of 402kg.
