Iraq: 3 rockets strike airbase in Salahudin province

(MENAFN) A provincial security source stated that on Wednesday, Jun. 9 three Katyusha rockets as a minimum hit an Iraqi military airbase in Salahudin province, north of the Iraq’s capital.

Mohammed al-Bazi, from the provincial police, said to Xinhua that the occurred during the night when the rockets settled on the Balad Air Base, around 90 km north of the capital, without instant reports regarding the casualties.

Al-Bazi stated that two of the rockets struck a building in the airbase, causing slight damages, further saying that the rockets were launched from the adjacent province of Diyala.

Balad, which has Iraqi F-16 fighters and a camp for a number of U.S. experts for the planes, is the biggest military airbase in the country. The U.S. troops and experts departed earlier from the airbase after their camp came under a string of rocket assaults by unknown militias.
