The Government says there is no move to close Sri Lanka's borders for tourists.

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that tourists will continue to be allowed into the country and so will Sri Lankans returning from overseas.

He said that strict health regulations are implemented when tourists and Sri Lankans arrive in the country and that process will continue.

Ranatunga said that PCR tests are carried out on passengers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and anyone who tests positive for the coronavirus are isolated.

He said that there was an increase in the number of infected people detected among Sri Lankans returning to the country over the past few days.

The Tourism Minister added that Sri Lanka is now facing a dangerous situation.

However, he says the situation needs to be brought under control in order to ensure the tourism industry survives.

Ranatunga said that stopping tourists from arriving in the country will have an impact on the economy.

He said that the public were never told to ignore the coronavirus health guidelines during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Instead, he says they were advised to strictly follow the health guidelines during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The Minister, however, noted that most people were seen disregarding the health guidelines in places like Nuwara Eliya, Maharagama, and Sigiriya.

As a result, he says the situation will be monitored over the next two days and appropriate measures will be taken thereafter. (Colombo Gazette)
