Typhoon Goni kills 16, leaves 3 missing in Philippines


(MENAFN) Philippines' disaster management body announced on Monday that Typhoon Goni, which has swept throughout the south of the country"s main island of Luzon, has so far claimed a total of 16 lives.


The death toll has jumped to 16, whereas another 3 people are still lost, according to a report released by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Bicol, one of the worst-hit southernmost areas of the main island of Luzon.

Goni was a "Super Typhoon" when it first made landfall at dawn on Sunday, packing maximum sustained winds of 225 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 310 kilometers per hour.

It then faded as it blew out of the country.

Typhoon Goni caused heavy floods and landslides in the Bicol region, and left a track of destruction in 12 among the Philippines" 17 regions.
