(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Inclusion and Special Needs Support Center at Qatar University (SLSC)-(QU) provides an integrated plan for students with special needs facing various challenges in Distance Learning System, Dr. Khaled Khader, Head of SLSC-QU has said.
The distance learning platforms vary according to the type of disability of the students. For the students who are visually impaired, their lecture are recorded in audio format and for the students having hearing disability are provided with written lectures. The entire lectures are in the ‘Blackboard' application from which the students can review their lectures at appropriate time.
In order to highlight the efforts of the department, Dr. Khaled Khader shared his plan to support the students. The students have access to all kind of electronic support which includes; Email, WhatsApp, WebEx and other apps that guarantee more accessibility to students based on their accommodations. In order to avail academic support the students are required to send an email at ‘ [email protected] '.
Students must attach their medical documents with the email. This will help the faculty to prepare lectures and exams according to their health condition and special needs. Books and study materials will be converted into accessible formats and will be send out via emails.
Students facing problems can directly call (hotline 50880048) or the staff phone numbers to solve their problems. By using the inclusion and special needs WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms the students can discuss challenges which they are facing. SLSC-QU will provide all the circulation of the lessons via videos. The center is coordinating daily with the Information Technology Department to ensure the activation of all digital accessibility tools in the Blackboard send email.
Student's Assessment for assistive technology forms will be sent via email or conducted through hotline. Students will be provided consultations regarding best assistive technologies for online learning based on their individual needs and requirements. To ensure the best methods of conducting accessible lectures through the Collaborated website, the faculty members are providing audio and visual content for the lecture in addition to written files.
Few steps are being taken to support all the students including students with special needs, to avoid barriers in teaching and learning process. The entire faculty is sending lectures link via emails to the students in addition to the ‘Blackboard'.
Students can interact with teachers with audio and video facility. Recording option is also available for the students to review the lecture if any important topic is missed. Important points and lecture's summary will be given in written format to students.
