U.S. officials said on Wednesday that U.S. military aircraft was struck down in Yemen on late Tuesday.

A spokesman with the U.S. Central Command said that "We are investigating reports of an attack by Iranian-backed Houthis forces on a U.S. unmanned aerial system operating in authorized airspace over Yemen."

The drone is thought to be struck by a missile and is an MQ-9 model.

Houthi rebels in Yemen said that they shot the drone down over the Dhamar province in Central Yemen on Tuesday night.
