Oman- Award launched to find new solutions for water challenges

The Salalah Sanitary Drainage Services Company has launched an award to find innovative solutions for water challenges, support and encourage scientific research initiatives.

The award has been launched in collaboration with The Research Council (TRC).

Titled, Salalah Award for Sanitary Drainage and Water, the award seeks to encourage research students and residents in the sultanate to participate and propose innovative solutions to combat the water situation in the sultanate and in the world.

Sheikh Eng Ghali bin Ahmed al Meshali, CEO, Salalah Sanitary Drainage Services Company, said, the initiative seeks to provide a platform for researchers and students. 'The award also aims to support and encourage outstanding research initiatives of scientific teams represented by academic researchers, students of higher education institutions, interested and innovators in the sultanate in cooperation with TRC.'

Dr Mohammed bin Nasser al Rawahi, director of strategic research programme for water research at TRC, said, 'The first round of the Salalah award includes various fields stemming from the reality of water challenges in the sultanate in general and Salalah in particular.'

Elaborating on the conditions of the award, Dr Rawahi said, 'The participant can be an Omani or a resident not less than 18 years. Applicant should be aware of the issues revolving around the water sector. Interested candidates can register individually or as a team.'

He added, 'A team cannot have more than five members. The applicant should be prepared to provide any supporting information that the jury may request. Participant should submit an original idea and register viawww.trc.gov.om  

Applicants can register for the award till September 12, 2019, said Dr Rawahi. 'The next phase of the award will be from September 15-19. The examination and acceptance phase of the award will be in accordance with the terms of submission. The third phase will see a workshop for those who have been shortlisted based on the stipulated conditions.'

He added, 'Five teams will be shortlisted in the fourth and final stage with the provision of financial support. Candidates will be required to complete work on the models of their innovations and studies until March 2020. The final evaluation and announcement of the winners will be in March or April 2020.'
