Turkey says joint operation center with US for Syria safe zone opens soon

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Aug 12 (KUNA) -- A joint operation center in Turkey for a planned safe zone in northeast Syria, as agreed upon by Ankara and the United States, will soon be up and running, Turkey's defense minister said on Monday.
The measure stems from an earnest desire on Turkey's part" to work closely with our friend and ally, the United States," Hulusi Akar told state television, citing other individual plans Ankara has in store.
He touched on talks last week between military officials from both countries, which focused on the "fight against terrorism," besides other matters such as disarming the Kurdish YPG militia, an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers party (PKK), which Turkey designates as a terrorist group.
Ankara and Washington agreed last week to establish a joint operation center in Turkey to manage a planned safe zone in northeast Syria, a measure deemed an alternative to Turkish military action. (end)
