Jordan- PM pledges further support to Aqaba regional hub bid

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Aqaba, July 23 (Petra) -- Prime Minister Omar Razzaz on Tuesday pledged his government's full support to all efforts exerted to turn Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba a regional trade and shipping hub.
During a tour to the southern city, the prime minister toured a new container terminal designed to cater for a growing commercial and shipping activity, describing Aqaba as a true Jordanian success story.
He pointed out that the container terminal, which has a Jordanian labor rate of about 99.4%, provides a key public income stream injecting some JOD50 million to the state's treasury in 2018. The 50 percent government-owned terminal is a distinguished example of public-private partnerships, the prime minister said.
Razzaz also stressed that Aqaba's new ports continue to record important achievements in terms of high capacity and work turnaround and will receive more cruise ships in the coming period.
The Aqaba Container Terminal is a sustainable pillar of the local Aqaba community. It is characterized by the speed and accuracy of its operational management. It includes facilities that accommodate ships of large sizes with a depth of 18 meters and a maximum length of 540 meters, with an area of 500,000 square meters.
Accompanied by a number of ministers and top officials, the prime minister inspected a fertilizer plant at the southern industrial complex of the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, which witnessed a few days ago a limited leakage of phosphoric acid. He was briefed on measures taken by the company to address the leak and ensure that it does not occur in the future.
The prime minister ordered that an expert third party be hired along local stakeholders to evaluate the status of the tanks used in the industrial complex for the storage of ammonia, phosphoric acid, acid and other hazardous substances.
Razzaz instructed to evaluate last week's phosphoric acid leakage on the structure foundations and their sustainability.
