Oman likely to field teams in 8 sports at GCC Women Games


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman is likely to field athletes in eight sports at the sixth edition of the GCC Women Games, which will be held in Kuwait from March 3-13 next year.

The decision to field teams in eight events was proposed during the recent meeting of the Oman Women's Sport Committee (OWSC). The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sayyida Sanaa al Busaidi, the OWSC chief.

The committee approved the participation at the GCC Games in Kuwait and proposed participation in eights sports - volleyball, athletics, shooting, handball, taekwondo, basketball, bowling and athletics for physically challenged. The committee will get in touch with respective associations and the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) for finalising the teams and its preparations.

At the fifth edition in Doha, Qatar in 2017, Oman finished fourth with 32 medals that included ten gold, nine silver and 17 bronze. Qatar had won the overall honours with 60 medals including 21 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze.

Nayaz stars in EY victory

An allround show by Mohammed Nayaz, who scored 54 and then took two wickets for six runs, coupled with a miserly bowling spell by Pankaj Gupta (three wickets for eight runs), guided EY to an emphatic 53-run victory over Basta CT in an Oman Cricket B Division match at Al Amerat recently.

Besides Nayaz's half-century, knocks from Muhammed Attique (44) and Omar Sarfraz (35) led EY to 185 for eight in 30 overs.

Nazish Mohammed was the pick of bowlers with three for 41.

In its chase, Basta folded up for a paltry 132 in 23 overs. Prasad Peruli (40) and Murad Khan (20) were the only notable scorers. Besides Gupta and Nayaz, Alkesh Joshi picked up two wickets.

Brief scores: EY 185-8 in 30 overs (Nayaz 54, Attique 44, Sarfraz 35; Mohammed 3-41, Murad Khan 2-28, Shihab Said 2-39) beat Basta CT 132 all out in 23 overs (Peruli 40, Khan 20; Gupta 3-8, Nayaz 2-3, Alkesh Joshi 2-26).

Other results: C Division: OCT Al Hail 188-6 in 20 overs (Ismail Ghulam 43, Waleed Rahim 42, Adnan Ghani 42 n.o.; Puneet Mehta 3-25, Rooswin Anto 2-40) beat Attic Outdoors 187-7 in 20 overs (Qasim al Ahmed 45, Hafiz Irfan 41; Nadhir Ghulam 2-19, Hisam Shafi 2-30).

D Division: NBO 151-6 in 20 overs (Maanas Kapoor 38, Baiju Lawrence 30 n.o.; Fazal Khan 2-34) lost to Zubair CT 152-9 in 19.5 overs (Mohsin Abbas Zaidi 51, Khan 22; Zaheer Abbas 3-31, Shahid Mughal 2-13).

Shounak claims title, double for Manvi

Shounak Kelkar won the boys' U17 title while Manvi Saravanan claimed a grand double at the Open Table Tennis Tournament, organised by the Indian Social Club Oman (ISC).

Second seed Shounak upset defending champion Wiryawan Kiko 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6 in the final while Manvi emerged winner in the girls' U14 and U17 events. Manvi outplayed Dimple Malawiya 11-8, 11-7, 11-0, 11-5 for the U14 honours and then overcame Tanishqa Mishra 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-3 for the U17 crown.

Also, Spaniard George Lopez retained the veterans' title with a 17-15, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4, 13-11 victory over Egyptian Ashraf Ghali.
