Macron: France committed to resuming dialogue between Palestinians, Israelis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- French President Emmanuel Macron stressed on Friday his country's commitment to the resumption of dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis.
Macron discussed the Palestinian cause and a two-state solution with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the French presidential palace (Elysee) said in a statement. The two sides also focused on the ongoing Egyptian-brokered negotiations held between Palestinian Authority and Hamas movement, with the aim of reaching a national unit, the statement noted.
The statement stressed France's support for such efforts and called on Abbas and Hamas to fully participate in negotiations to allow the Palestinian authorities to return to Gaza and hold elections in the upcoming months.
Macron renewed his country's commitment to Israel's security, but denounced the Israeli settlement activities which increased over the last months, according to the statement.
Violations committed by Israel in the Palestinian village of Khan Al-Ahmar were also on the focus of talks between the two leaders.
For his part, Abbas, during a joint news conference with Macron, affirmed that Palestine didn't reject negotiations with Israel, but Israelis did.
Abbas noted that they (Palestinians) are ready for either secret or public talks, under the mediation of the international quartet and other countries.
Europeans are working seriously in this regard, in the wake of the US' stance taken against the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The US cut financial aid allocated to the agency. (end) mjz.hm
