Oman- Sultanate marks day against drug abuse and trafficking

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The sultanate celebrated International Day Against Dug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Tuesday with various activities at the Kempinski Hotel Muscat. The day is celebrated on June 26 every year. The celebration included the announcement of the results of a community competition on drugs and psychotropic substances control.
The project, 'My health is in My Life – My Addiction is My Prison' from the wilayat of Bausher was awarded the first prize.
The second position was awarded to the project, 'Measuring the Awareness Level of Parents on Drugs Risks', from the wilayat of Amerat and 'A Society Free of Drugs' from the wilayat of Liwa stood third.The projects, 'Reducing the Spread of Drugs & Psychotropic Substances' from Mirbat and 'My Nation is Free of Drugs'from Sohar stood fourth.
Awards were also given to a number of wilayats such as Quriyat (An Aware Community without Drugs), Saham (A Family without Drugs), Ibri (Yes for Life…No for Drugs), Suwaiq (Be Aware) and Sur (Tobacco & Drugs Control).Dr Huda al Siyabia, director of Community Health Initiatives and head of Competition Evaluation Team said that the competition is a participatory work based on adopting and implementing community-based projects.
The day also saw the launch of the first edition of the manual for preparation of awareness programmes in the field of drugs and psychotropic substances.
The celebration was organised by the Executive Office of the National Committee for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (NCNPS) under the theme, 'Initiate...The Community Needs You'.Dr Mahmoud bin Zahir al Abri, supervisor, NCNPS stated that the theme this year highlighted the importance of having an essential role to play in tackling the drugs problem.He also added that the manual has been developed as a basic reference.
The celebration was held under the patronage of Dr Abdullah bin Nasser al Harrasi, chairman of Public Authority for Radio & Television in the presence of Maj Gen Hamad bin Suleiman al Hatmi, Assistant Inspector General of Police and Customs Operations along with a number of undersecretaries, walis and senior officials.The chief guest toured the awareness exhibition that included the ten projects that participated in the competition.
