French FM: Paris supports 2 states' settlement in Mideast

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, April 29 (KUNA) -- French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Sunday re-affirmed Paris' support for the two states' solution to the Middle East conflict and its rejection of any measures that might alter legal and historic status of Jerusalem.
Le Drian, during a meeting with Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit, noted that France voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly's Resolution for Jerusalem in December, according to a League statement.
Palestinian developments were among the basic issues examined by the two sides. Abul-Gheit for his part noted that the Arab leaders during the latest summit in Saudi Arabia affirmed support for safeguarding the holy city.
France, Abul-Gheit said, can play a significant role at the international level considering its membership in the UN Security Council, to support the Palestinians' legitimate rights, namely establishing an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Abul-Gheit also noted that the France could pressure Israel to honor resolutions of the international legitimacy and stop escalatory action against the Palestinians.
The two sides examined the Syrian issue, namely humanitarian support for the Syrian people. On libya, Abul-Gheit discussed with the French ministers support for the UN envoy tasked with finding a compromise among the warring parties.
