Filipino worker gets 2 years jail for drug use in Dubai

(MENAFN- Asia Times) A Filipino worker in Dubai has been sentenced to two years in jail after being convicted of drug charges.

The 40-year-old Filipino worker was arrested last October by the Dubai Police's Anti-Narcotics Department for possessing and consuming drugs in his apartment in Karama, Gulf News reported.

The police searched the man's apartment and found a small amount of methamphetamine. During the man's interrogation, he admitted to having communicated with a convict in Dubai Central Jail about where to pick up the illegal drug.

The man was charged at the Dubai Court of First Instancein February for possessing 0.49 grams of methamphetamine for "promotional purposes" and consuming the substance.

The court sentenced him to two years in jail. However, he filed an appeal at the Appeal Court to try to get his sentence reduced. Meanwhile, prosecutors also appealed against the punishment given to the man and sought to get a tougher sentence.

The Appeal Court upheld the original sentence of two years and added a fine of 10,000 dirhams (US$2,723).

Officials said the man would be deported once he pays the fine and completes his jail term.
